GRACIE

When our beloved Princess Dobie succumbed to cancer in May, 2006, her passing left the largest void imaginable. Princess also left a beautiful legacy…unconditional love, a gentle spirit, and a presence that lit up the lives of all who knew her. We could not imagine life without a dog, and after owning our first Dobie, Princess, we could not imagine owning any other breed. As one of Princess' vets told us, "Dobermans are a superb breed and they are brilliant dogs." We (of course) already knew that.

Jill, our DAR&E coordinator, told us to take our time and enjoy the process of looking for another Dobie to cherish and love. Just as we were beginning to think that perhaps we were not ready for another dog, our beautiful Gracie (a "Non-DAR&E" Doberman) bounced into our lives and hearts and came to her "forever home" on July 15, thanks to such good friends at DAR&E.

Our cherished Gracie, now almost two years old, had a rocky beginning to life, living in several homes in her first year. When we met her, she was quite thin and she had bare patches on her skin from rubbing against a kennel that had been her home.

She has since made herself right at home and has learned which chair and bed are hers. Gracie has "pillow issues" and loves to toss pillows off the bed and off her special chair and off "Grandmom's" sofa before settling right in - turning around, more turning, figuring out how she can lie on top of a favorite pillow, and finally falling sound asleep. She is fascinated by the wildlife in the yard at her new home - deer, fox, squirrels, and birds (and probably others we cannot see).

At 65 pounds, she is a true lap dog and she loves to snuggle. Her separation anxiety has all but disappeared thanks to a loving home, a wonderful vet, a roomy, comfy and safe crate, a healthy diet, yummy treats, lot of toys (even stuffed ones she loves to shred), plenty of exercise with new-found canine neighbors and a never-ending supply of hugs and kisses from family and friends.

Gracie now has a gorgeous shiny black coat, one beautiful clear gold eye and one lovely deep brown eye. She holds her head high, always cocked to one side, and is inquisitive and energetic. When she is excited, she literally bounces from room to room. Gracie's antics bring us so much laughter, her presence in our home is one of sheer joy.

Thank you, DAR&E!!!
