This is Kayla's Story!

kayla3.jpg (161022 bytes)

I adopted my Kayla, who now has become quite the social queen. We have had her since November, when she was estimated to be about 7months old. We have decided to celebrate her birthday as May 18. The same day as my other baby Chance who will be 7. Just wanted to share....... Kathleen

Hi, my name is Kayla and I was adopted from DARE. My former owners dropped me at a shelter, and a very nice lady from DARE named Athy took me into her home. Something they call foster care I think. She helped me to feel better' cause the people who dropped me off said I was bad, couldnt be potty trained and was of no use to them anymore. My foster mom Athy took me to the Doctor, got all my necessary shots(they only hurt a little, but I was brave) got me spayed(whatever that is) and made me feel better. At least this mommy didnt keep me locked up in the bathroom all the time, or yell at me and tell me I was stupid. She let me play with her other dobe babies, and I had fun. Then after a couple weeks, this lady came to my foster home, and played and played with me. She kept hugging me and kissing me and patting my head. Her name was Kathleen and I heard her tell my Mommy that her little girl Lacey had went to heaven , cause she had cancer. She said the vet had tried his best to help Lacey, but she was very sick. I was sad for her. Then after awhile of us playing and her talking to my Mommy Athy, she said she wanted to take me home. TAKE ME HOME.......YIKES.....I kinda liked this new lady but I was hoping she wouldnt treat me bad like the people who dropped me off at the shelter, and told me I was dumb. Well, reluctantly my foster Mom Athey, said it was OK. I HAD TO TRUST HER CAUSE SHE HAD BEEN SO GOOD TO ME. I went home to the lady named Kathleen's house that very day. She had a big boy, and I mean big.....named Chance for me to meet. He was OK. He let me share his toys, food, and let me play with him. That was way back in November of 2000. Well.........let me tell you...... My Mommy thinks I am something called a dober princess. I don't know what that means, but she says I am spoiled rotten too. She took me to obedience class, and we passed with flying colors. She tells me I am sooooo smart, sometimes to smart for my own good. I get to sleep in the nice warm bed with her and Chance. Sometimes my Daddy has to move to the sofa in the middle of the night 'cause there isn't enough room for all of us, and I really hog the covers. My Mommy is always hugging and kissing me and telling me what a good girl I am. She also tells me she loves me. My Daddy loves me too. Well, This is my story. My Mommy says she will never be able to thank the wonderful people at DARE, 'cause without them, she wouldn't have ME........and I wouldnt have HER.......

Kayla's Updated Success Story:
As some of you may have read in Kayla's Success Story, she was dropped at the shelter in Baltimore because her owners had called DAR&E one morning, but decided they couldnt wait for a return call several hours later to pick up their undesirable dog, so misbehaved, and dumb, and not housetrained.
As luck would have it DAR&E was contacted by the shelter, so Kayla luckily came into DARE anyway. Her previous owners had decided the "cute little puppy" could'nt be dealt with and kept her locked in a bathroom, and only out on leash for pottie breaks, and then back to the bathroom.
Kayla has been with me now for almost two years. She's a mile a minute gal, with continual boundless energy, and wiggly butt. Her start was not easy in my home, and separation anxiety was strong, even though she had CHANCE, my gentle giant dobe boy to keep her company while I was at work. She chewed, dug holes, and as soon as I realized she needed "something to do" as she was so smart, her behavior that was not-so-desirable decreased. We started a Mt. Airy playgroup, where Monday nights are where you will see dobes all playing in harmony, and releasing the boundless energy that never seems to end, and an occasional lab or retriever as well. She tells the "boys" who is in charge, and dares them to say differently. Jester is her special friend, and you can read about his success story as well. It was love at first sight for them, and they continue to LOVE each other every Monday night at playgroup.
Kayla now helps me, a DARE volunteer at various events along side her Brother Chance. Her eyes can melt your soul, but behind them you will always find the mischief she is famous for. She still grabs a sock outta the clothes basket, and looks back waiting for chase. Or steals Chance's toy or bone, and begs him to chase. She will run full speed into your arms, kissing your face all the way. Its hard to imagine what life would be like without her I can still find an occasional hole dug in my yard, or missing sock, or shoe, or the roll of toilet paper unraveled and wet, That may never end. She can make you laugh, and just a bit mad once in a great while, smother you with kisses, and take up way to much room in the bed, and she still hogs all the covers. Those eyes will forever melt my soul.
