Buddy's Story

By his Hospice Care Foster mom, Jeannie

Buddy is a senior Doberman. He has a graying muzzle, his joints are stiff and he has that "wisdom of the ages" look in his eyes. He came into rescue as a stray with a bullet wound in his neck. That explains the pain and confusion that, at first, mingled with the wisdom in his eyes.

We don't know Buddy's background. Perhaps he was a stray someone picked up to use as target practice, perhaps he was one of those "free to good home" ads that sends a feeling of dread through rescuers everywhere when they read them. Those "free" dogs all too often end up being sold to laboratories, used as pit bull bait to encourage/teach aggression, or some other horrific fate. What we do know is that Buddy ended up shot in the neck and dumped on the side of the road, left for dead. A kind passerby stopped and managed to get the badly bleeding Doberman help before it was too late.

Buddy's wounds are healed now and he has recovered from his injuries. He was available for adoption for a while, but DAR&E has made the decision to place Buddy in Hospice care. He has residual pain from his gunshot injury, in addition to arthritis and probably some Wobblers pain. He is kept comfortable with pain medication, but does require special care. Given his age and his health, DAR&E feels it best for Buddy to keep him in the environment he now considers his home. He's happy and secure there and will spend the rest of his days knowing he's loved and safe.
