Dogs For Adoption

About Abby

Abby is a 3-year-old, red/rust, female Doberman with natural ears and a docked tail. She is a beautiful full-sized Dobie of 80-ish pounds and wants to be a lap dog… literally, she slowly crawls into your lap to fit as much as possible on you. If you want a dog that you can wrap your arms around for big hugs and nuzzle each other then she is the one for you! She likes to be your shadow and is a typical Velcro Doberman. Her resume includes: helping you around the house by pre-washing the dishes in the rack, eating food bits that have fallen on the floor, tapping you with a wet nose when you snooze your alarm in the morning, keeping squirrels out of the yard, and barking to alert you of stranger danger.  

She is fully house-trained, does not get on the furniture, and has had a full run of the house while I am at work without incident. She has been prone to counter surfing when food is left out, or trash can diving to look for scraps. Stowing the trash can and limiting her access to areas when food is left out is the best solution. She is very food motivated but isn’t a picky eater (even eating veggies from the fridge… but chicken is her favorite!) She sleeps quietly on a dog bed in my room at night only getting up to check that I am still there before going back to lie down. She loves riding in the car with her head out of the window, playing with squishy/ squeaky balls, knows sit-shake-laydown, waits for my “ok” before eating her meals, and uses a doggie door with ease. She might be the ONLY Doberman who doesn’t mind getting a bath and has no problems walking in the rain or hearing thunder. I have done a short jog with her in the neighborhood and seems like she could be a good running buddy.  

It appears that Abby had puppies in the past but she spayed now. She is a good watchdog. She will bark to alert you to other dogs, strangers, and loud noises until you call her by name and acknowledge her alert by words and/or petting her. This reaction is getting less each day as she builds up trust and confidence in her new life.  Abby lived with multiple dogs in the past but may flourish more in an only-dog household.   

I take her to the office often and she sleeps in her bed and chews on toys most of the day. She will nudge you or whine to notify you that she needs to go out for a potty break. She wedges her head under your arm to encourage you to pet her sending my cursor flying across the screen. She loves people. She will bark at someone new but once you tell her it’s ok she will then walk up to them and lean against them to get petted.  

She is quickly picking up good leash-walking skills, but still learning. Like most dogs, she likes to chase squirrels, rabbits, etc. She will not do well in a house with cats, or small pets because of her joy of the chase. She loves to run in the yard back and forth from tree to tree in the hopes of getting a squirrel. I would recommend a fenced-in yard to help her shed some adolescent energy without forgetting where home is after chasing something. She doesn’t dig in the yard, but I have lost a few plants by her stepping on them in hot pursuit.   

Abby may look like the large guard dog, but when you look into her eyes you can see that she is all marshmallow inside. Her previous years may have been less than ideal, but with a loving home, the next chapter in her life will be worth waiting for.
