Please join us in thanking Emily Westphal, DVM and the associates of CVCA for their time and effort in this providing this important cardio clinic for early detection of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). We are grateful for her support in continuing these clinics.
DCM is one of the most common acquired heart diseases in dogs, especially those breeds with large chest cavities. There are several breeds that are genetically predisposed to DCM. These include Doberman Pinschers, Great Danes, Boxers, Newfoundlands, Portuguese Water Dogs, Dalmatians and Cocker Spaniels. DCM is not just limited to specific breeds. Large and giant breeds are most commonly affected, but it also occurs in smaller breed dogs and cats as well.
DCM is a slowly progressive disease. If it is diagnosed in the early stages, the patient may live several years before developing clinical signs. In some breeds, such as Doberman Pinschers, sudden death accounts for 30% of the deaths from DCM well before these dogs ever develop congestive heart failure. In animals with DCM with early detection, medical therapy can help prolong survival.1
Because of CVCA’s endeavors for making affordable health care available to our animals in need, we are able to offer this Cardio Clinic at a significantly reduced cost. A portion of the proceeds from this clinic will assist neglected, abused and abandoned Doberman Pinschers. DAR&E (Doberman Assistance, Rescue and Education) is a non-profit all-volunteer organization operating in DC, Maryland, Virginia & parts of WV.
The clinic will be held at the Dogwood Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center. This is a SCREENING CLINIC only – dogs with known problems should make an appointment to see their regular cardiologist. Exams for cats can also be provided at this clinic. Tell all your friends and fellow pet lovers about this clinic. This clinic is open to ALL breeds of dogs or cats.
Confirmations will be sent to registrants by email approximately one week prior to the clinic.
