Sophie is a 4 year old black/tan female Doberman. She is a very pretty girl despite the fact that someone butchered her ears.
We don't know much about Sophie's past. She was picked up as a stray and came to us from a local shelter. Lucky for Sophie that she escaped from what I am guessing wasn't a very good life. By looking at her, you can tell she was used as a breeder who was probably bred every time she came into season. She is spayed now. I am sure she gave the world a lot of great puppies because she is a very special girl. She had pressure sores so she was probably confined a lot in a small, hard surfaced area. Not surprisingly, Sophie does not trust people right away. Her trust of me and my husband has come slowly and still has a very long way to go but seeing her playful side emerge as well as her underlying strength and confidence has been special to watch.
Sophie makes me laugh every day. I so appreciate her courage and determination. Sophie has a regal quality about her that steals your heart but her past has left emotional scars that may never go away completely. Anyone considering adopting Sophie should recognize that.
Sophie has done well with her house training although I don't think I would trust her for a long 8-10 day. I have not crated her because initially she was terrified of being confined in a small area. I feed her in a very large wire crate so she has learned not to fear the crate, but I have not shut the door on her.
Sophie is VERY food motivated. It’s a blessing because she will do almost anything for food if she feels safe. Because Sophie is so food motivated, she needs to be confined in a safe space when not supervised. She constantly looks for food and may think something is food that really isn't. She can be destructive so safe confinement is a must.
When Sophie feels threatened her desire is to run, but if she can't run she shuts down. She is never aggressive. I have to maneuver her near the car then "help" her get in. Once in the car she seems to enjoy riding. It’s just the initial unknown that causes her to freeze up. That’s Sophie. If something scares her, she wants to run or she freezes up.
She is afraid to be on a leash so a fenced back yard is a must. Sophie enjoys a romp around the yard occasionally, but she is not overly high energy. She likes other dogs once she feels comfortable that they don't mean her any harm, but, like everything else, it takes a lot of time and a lot of kind patience. Sophie enjoys having her ears rubbed and she lets me brush her and give her a good butt scratching now. That's some real progress!
We are working on her letting me wipe her off after being out in the rain. Sophie is a complicated lady for sure. If you are interested in knowing more about our sweet, gentle Sophie, contact DAR&E today. My husband says she only has one expression; he may have a point there.
