Dear Santa Paws,
My name is Grace, and I am a 4-year-old blue Doberman girl. My friend Willow and I were found wandering together last year and taken to a shelter. We were both in pretty rough shape. I was covered in fleas, had itchy skin and missing patches of fur, sores, runny eyes, whipworms, and several broken teeth. Willow had many of the same problems. Thankfully, the nice people at DAR&E came to our rescue!
My teeth were so badly damaged that the vets had to remove 16 of them, including all four of my canines. I still have a happy smile, just a little gummier now! But the biggest surprise was that Willow and I both tested positive for heartworms. Thanks to DAR&E, we received the treatment we needed, including X-rays, injections, medications, and lots of blood tests. It wasn’t easy, but we made it through!
Our foster family took wonderful care of us and reminded us how brave we were. Sadly, Willow became very sick. The vets discovered she had a spinal condition and an aggressive blood cancer. She eventually passed away. I miss my friend very much, but I know she was safe, loved, and never afraid. I was fortunate enough to find my forever family, and I love them so much!
Willow and I weren’t the only ones who needed help. Axel, a 4-year-old fawn Doberman boy, was also rescued by DAR&E. He suffered from heartworms, severe flea allergies, an eye cyst, and a thyroid condition. His foster family helped him through all his treatments, and the happy news is that he found his forever home, too!
Santa Paws, please remind all the pet parents that monthly, year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is so important. Heartworm disease is entirely preventable, and keeping up with monthly protection can spare dogs from the difficult treatments that Willow, Axel, and I endured.
I also hope you’ll remember all the Dobermans still waiting for their forever homes. Squeaky toys, fun balls, soft beds, yummy treats, and chew toys would make their Christmas extra special. Anything you can do to help them have a happy holiday would mean so much!
Thanks, Santa Paws!
Love, Grace
